Thinking about becoming a TMI Ambassador? Here are the answers to the questions we hear most. If yours isn’t here, just ask.
The basics
What is a TMI Ambassador?
An ambassador is a trained youth leader who brings TMI’s brain-health programs to their own school or community. We give you the training and the materials. You lead sessions with people you already know and where you already belong, like a club, a school, a library, or a youth group.
How is an ambassador different from a volunteer?
Volunteers join one of our departments (research, creative production, education, outreach, advocacy, or strategy) and work on projects remotely, on a flexible schedule. There’s no training requirement.
Ambassadors complete training and lead change in their own community. You can do both.
Who can apply, and where?
Anyone anywhere in the world. We’re an intergenerational project, so adolescents, caregivers, educators, and adults are all welcome. No experience required. Curiosity and commitment matter most.
If you’re under 18, you’ll need a supportive adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or parent, who knows about your sessions.
Does it cost anything?
No. Applying, training, and our program materials are free.
What you’ll do
What will I actually do?
You’ll lead short sessions, such as a lunchtime talk, a club meeting, or a presentation, using ready-made TMI materials. After each session, you’ll share quick feedback so we can keep improving the programs.
You don’t have to build a workshop from scratch.
What topics will I teach?
Our programs connect to one idea: when people don’t have coping tools that fit their strengths and needs, risk follows. Our first materials cover coping and nicotine prevention. Teen driving safety and bullying prevention are in development.
Do I need to be an expert?
No. Our programs are built from research and reviewed by our team and advisors, and training shows you how to deliver them. You’re a peer educator, not a clinician or counselor.
What if someone in my session needs support?
Training covers this. Ambassadors never give personal or medical advice. Instead, you’ll:
- Follow a session script
- Share crisis and support resources for your own country or region
- Connect anyone who needs help with a trusted adult or a local service
Getting started
How much time does it take?
You’ll attend a monthly training call and spend time preparing and leading your sessions. Most of the work happens on your own schedule, and it’s up to you how many sessions to lead.
What do I get?
- Training through monthly calls
- Ready-to-use program materials
- Guidance from TMI’s team
- A network of other young leaders to learn from
- Recognition, including ambassador shoutouts on our Instagram
- Real leadership experience you can talk about in applications and interviews
How do I apply?
Fill out the short application. Tell us where you could lead a session and which topics interest you. We review applications in cycles, then invite selected applicants to a short conversation before training begins.
What about starting a chapter?
Chapters are the next step. Ambassadors who have led sessions in their community can apply to lead a school or community chapter.
